Injured at a school sporting event?
Any injury can be stressful and overwhelming—especially when it involves a child or prevents an athlete from participating in the sport they love. In those moments, it is important to know what steps to take and what resources are available to help.
All of our local schools carry supplemental athletic insurance designed to help ease the financial burden for student-athletes and their families. Below is a simple overview of what to expect as you begin the process of injury evaluation and treatment with a healthcare professional.

-
If you are injured at school, during a school-sponsored activity, or at any school-sanctioned event (including events held away from your home school), your injury may be eligible for coverage under the school's insurance policy. You must ensure that your school district does, in fact, have an insurance policy in place. Most do, but some do not.
-
Your personal health insurance is considered the primary insurance provider, even when the injury is related to a school activity. The school's insurance serves as secondary coverage, meaning the amount it may cover depends on what your personal insurance pays first, as well as the specific coverage provided by your school's policy.
In many cases, the school's insurance may cover some or all of the remaining eligible expenses after your personal insurance has been billed. Because coverage can vary, we encourage you to contact your school's administration for specific policy details.
Also, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Elevation for assistance.

If the injury is determined to be eligible for coverage, the process is as follows:
The coach or athletic trainer will complete an accident report documenting the injury.
The accident report will be submitted to the school district's central office and forwarded to the insurance carrier.
Once the insurance company receives the necessary information from the school, you will receive a letter in the mail containing additional information and any required forms.
It is A MUST that you complete and return these forms promptly. The school's insurance company cannot approve or process your claim until the required paperwork has been received.

Middle school injuries follow the same approval and coverage process as high school injuries. You still must ensure that insurance is available, and the injury must be in a school sanctioned event of some kind.
